Wood Duck Box
Wood Duck Box
Wood Duck Box / HouseThis large cedar house is designed to provide a proper sized nesting cavity for wood ducks and hooded mergansers. In addition to a 3 inch x 4 inch oval entry hole and side clean-out, a 6 inch hardware cloth strip is stapled to the inside front, providing a climbing aid for ducklings.
Wood ducks face a shortage of suitable nesting sites, as do most cavity nesters. These secretive ducks start nesting in January in the south, a bit later farther north. Mount the box on a post in a shallow pond or on a pondside or streamside tree. Monitor the box during the nesting season and note dates of first and last egg, # of eggs, etc. If you time it right, you may be lucky enough to see the ducklings parachute out the day after hatching!
